When I heard that this medieval herbal was now online, I was delighted. Then I received notification that there was a new modern English translation. Even better! Based on the price of the book, I assumed there would be illustrations.Imagine my disappointment when I discovered a very few black and white line drawings.Well, I guess it can serve as a companion to the online medieval companion...
Arrived quickly...it is what my daughter wanted yet the price seemed high for a paperback...small paperback
This book is absolutely wonderful! The author gives a thorough background of the manuscript's interpretation, showing how his Victorian biases heavily influenced his interpretation of the text. Van Arsdall provides a new interpretation and translation of the text. If you are at all interested in Medieval herbalism, this is a wonderful introduction and resource.
I was expecting the book to look like an old manuscript. It is interesting and has some insightful suggestions.

rather overpriced, and the format is not particularly interesting. And while not the problem with the product, it was shipped in a cardboard box and left outside of my mailbox despite it's small size and the rain that day warped it.
If you want to know how the Anglo-Saxons healed themselves and others, you need this book. The author begins with several chapters on the first translation by Oswald Cockayne and its faults. Her research on this man is extensive.
